Did you know? February is American Heart Month! That means now is the time to start taking better care of your heart. Take charge today with the right steps to better heart health. Here’s how to get started:

Portion Sizes
Not only is it important to watch what you eat, but it is just as important to control how much you are eating. By using a small plate, you can better control your portions and keep track of the number of servings you’re eating. Consider eating large portions of low-calorie foods that are rich in nutrients – like fruits and vegetables. In contrast, you will want to eat small portions of high-calorie foods that are high in sodium and processed fats.

Foods to Avoid
Next, try to avoid foods like white bread, muffins, doughnuts, buttered popcorn and frozen waffles. Consider following a paleo diet, abundant in fresh vegetables that are high in fiber.

Reduced Sodium
High sodium consumption contributes to high blood pressure, which then puts you at risk for cardiovascular disease. To lower your sodium intake, avoid eating processed or canned foods like frozen dinners and soups. Consider cooking your own fresh foods with herbs, spices, and salt substitutes.

Exercise
Regular exercise is a beneficial way to keep your heart healthy. Regular activity for at least 30 minutes every day will help – but depending on your age or any preexisting conditions, the duration and activity types can differ.
